Security warning

Keys are held in an ST33K1M5 secure element certified to CC EAL6+, the same chip as in the Stax and the Nano S Plus, and the firmware is closed source. The 2.8 inch screen is part of the security case: Ledger's Clear Signing and Transaction Check can show a whole transaction in one view rather than across several scrolls of a Nano display. The December 2023 Ledger Connect Kit compromise hit a JavaScript library that third party sites load, not the device, and Ledger's 2020 e-commerce breach exposed customer contact details rather than keys.

The Ledger Flex is the touchscreen Ledger to buy, and it makes the $399 Stax hard to justify. It costs $249, uses the same ST33K1M5 secure element certified to CC EAL6+, runs the same Ledger Wallet app, and shows addresses on a flat 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen behind Gorilla Glass at 480 x 600 pixels, which is more pixels than the Stax fits into its larger 400 x 670 curved screen. What the extra $150 buys on the Stax is size, an aluminum body, stacking magnets and wireless charging.

TechCrunch reported the Flex's launch on July 26, 2024. It connects over USB-C, Bluetooth and NFC, and works with iPhones, Android phones and desktop computers, so it covers everything the cable only Nano S Plus cannot. Ledger now includes a Ledger Recovery Key in the box: a card sized backup, secure element based and PIN protected, that you write your recovery phrase to with an NFC tap instead of trusting it only to paper.

The screen is the whole point of paying this much. On the two button Nano devices you check a receiving address across several scrolls of a 128 x 64 pixel display, and that is exactly where people stop reading and approve something they have not verified. Ledger's Clear Signing and Transaction Check have room to show a full transaction here. What has not changed is that the firmware is closed source, and that Ledger's brand still carries the 2020 breach of its e-commerce customer database and the December 2023 Ledger Connect Kit compromise, neither of which reached a device.

Where you can get the Ledger Flex

Ledger publishes one shipping policy for its whole store, so all four current devices carry the same list. Ledger names 15 countries and regions it will not ship to: Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Sudan and Syria. The 218 countries listed here are the other side of that list, and only 13 names are actually subtracted, because North Korea and Kosovo are not among the 231 countries this site covers. One caveat worth recording: the only page on ledger.com that still carries the list is the FAQ of an expired Samsung bundle promotion whose voucher lapsed on December 31, 2024, and shop.ledger.com/pages/shipping-policy now returns a 404. The answer is written store-wide (it answers whether there are any countries or regions where Ledger does not ship its products), so it is the best primary source available and should be re-checked whenever Ledger republishes the policy.
