Bitcoin mining: how it works and what to buy
Bitcoin mining is the work that secures the network and issues new coins. Specialized computers race to solve a cryptographic puzzle roughly every ten minutes; the winner writes the next block of transactions to the blockchain and collects 3.125 bitcoin plus transaction fees.
That race is what makes Bitcoin hard to cheat: rewriting history would mean redoing the work of a network hashing about 910 EH/s, a quintillion hashes per second each. How to choose a miner
Price per terahash
Divide the unit price by its hashrate before comparing anything else. A $4,000 miner at 234 TH/s costs about $17 per terahash; a $2,000 miner at 115 TH/s costs the same. The sticker price alone tells you very little.
Hashrate (TH/s)
Your share of the network's hash rate is your share of the rewards, all else equal. More terahashes mean more revenue, but also more power, heat and noise from the same box.
Power draw (W)
Watts drive your electricity bill directly: a 3,500 W miner burns 84 kWh every day, which is $8.40 daily at $0.10 per kWh before it earns anything. Multiply the wattage by 24, divide by 1,000, and price it at your local rate.
Efficiency (J/TH)
Joules per terahash is the single best number for comparing miners: how much energy each unit of work costs. Lower is better. The table above sorts by it for that reason, and as difficulty rises, only the low J/TH machines stay profitable.
Cooling and noise
Standard air-cooled units run at about 75 dB, roughly a vacuum cleaner that never stops. Hydro and immersion rigs are far quieter and more efficient but need plumbing. A few purpose-built home units stay between 30 and 55 dB.
How Bitcoin mining works
The whole system is one repeating loop, six steps long, that has run without a pause since the genesis block.
1.Transactions wait in the mempool
Every pending payment sits in the mempool until a miner picks it up, usually choosing the transactions that pay the highest fees first.
2.A miner assembles a candidate block
The miner bundles transactions together and adds a special coinbase transaction that pays the block reward to itself, contingent on winning.
3.The hardware races through nonces
This is proof of work: the machine hashes the block header with SHA-256 over and over, changing a nonce each time, hunting for an output below the network's target.
4.Someone finds a valid hash
Somewhere in the world, roughly every ten minutes, one machine gets lucky. Its owner broadcasts the finished block to the whole network immediately, because a block that arrives second is worthless.
5.The network verifies and accepts
Every node checks the block independently: valid transactions, valid hash, rules followed. If it passes, the block joins the chain and the race restarts on top of it.
6.The winner gets paid
The winning miner collects the block reward: the 3.125 BTC subsidy plus every fee in the block. This cycle has repeated around the clock since January 2009, and the subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks; our halving countdown tracks the next cut.
Who makes Bitcoin miners
Bitmain has been the dominant manufacturer for a decade. Its Antminer line, S9 through S23, has defined each generation's benchmark, and its current air-cooled and hydro flagships hold the top efficiency spots in the table above.
MicroBT is the closest competitor, founded by a former lead Bitmain chip engineer. Its Whatsminer series, like the M60S, has a reputation for rugged build quality, and many farms deliberately split orders between the two firms to avoid depending on either.
Canaan shipped the first Bitcoin ASIC ever sold, in 2013, and its Avalon line, from the industrial A15 Pro to the desk-size Nano 3S, is usually the value-priced alternative to the top two.
Beyond the big three sit smaller players like Bitdeer with its SealMiner line, home-focused newcomers like Fluminer, and the fully open-source Bitaxe project. Several public mining companies also hold bitcoin on their balance sheets; our treasuries leaderboard tracks them.
Mining at home
A full-size ASIC in a house is a bigger commitment than the price tag suggests. Four things decide whether it is workable.
Power
Full-size miners draw 3,300 to 5,700 W and need a dedicated 240 V circuit, which usually means an electrician. Purpose-built home units run on an ordinary wall outlet.
Internet
A stable wired ethernet connection is strongly recommended. Bandwidth needs are tiny, but every minute offline is revenue that never existed.
Heat
Nearly every watt a miner draws leaves as heat. A 3,500 W unit is a space heater that never switches off, which is a feature in a Nordic garage and a problem in a Texas summer.
Noise
75 dB of fan noise does not belong in a living space. If you cannot give a miner its own outbuilding, look at the quiet home units in the table above.
Software and pools
Nearly everyone points their hardware at a mining pool, which merges thousands of machines into one steady payout stream; solo mining survives mostly as a lottery-style hobby. The machine itself runs the manufacturer's firmware out of the box, and tinkerers often replace it with open alternatives like Braiins OS for better tuning. Newer pool protocols such as Stratum V2 let miners choose their own transactions rather than trusting the pool to.
Frequently asked questions
Is Bitcoin mining still profitable in 2026?
Only if your electricity is cheap. At $0.10 per kWh, a typical home rate, most current air-cooled miners lose money as of mid 2026; at $0.04 to $0.06, the rates industrial farms pay, the efficient models earn a margin. Before buying anything, multiply the miner's wattage by 24, price that at your rate, and compare it with what mining calculators project for its hashrate.
Do I need to mine to own bitcoin?
No. Buying bitcoin directly is simpler, cheaper to start, and gets you the same asset without hardware, electricity contracts, heat or noise. Mining only makes sense as a business with cheap power, or as a hobby you expect to pay for.
What is the difference between solo mining and pool mining?
Solo miners keep the entire block reward when they find a block, but a small miner may wait years, or forever, to find one. Pool mining combines many machines' hashrate and pays each contributor a small, steady share. Nearly everyone mines in a pool; solo mining survives mostly as a lottery-style hobby.
How much electricity does a Bitcoin miner use?
Full-size units draw 3,300 to 5,700 watts around the clock, which is 80 to 136 kWh per day, more than most households use in total. Small home units are different: 140 watts for a desk miner, down to 18 watts for a Bitaxe.
What happens to mining at the next halving?
The block subsidy drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC around 2028, cutting miner revenue per block roughly in half overnight unless the bitcoin price or transaction fees make up the difference. Every halving squeezes out the least efficient hardware, which is why the J/TH column matters more with each cycle.
Can I mine Bitcoin on a laptop or gaming PC?
Not meaningfully. Bitcoin mining is dominated by ASICs, chips built to do one thing a million times faster than general hardware. A high-end GPU manages a few hundred megahashes per second against an ASIC's hundreds of terahashes, so a laptop would earn fractions of a cent per year while wearing itself out.
