Yes, you can buy bitcoin in Germany easily and legally: it is one of the best-regulated markets in the world. Bitvavo leads our ranking on the fee criterion at 0.15 percent, ahead of Bitpanda, a MiCA-licensed broker supervised by BaFin, and Relai, a bitcoin-only app with EU authorisation, with Kraken, Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Binance also serving German customers under the EU framework. Most Germans fund purchases by SEPA transfer, which is free or nearly free and settles fast. Germany also gives long-term holders a rare gift: hold your bitcoin for over a year and any gain is tax-free for private individuals.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for Germany. It shows the method in two steps: first the country you are buying in, then the exchange. You have done step one by being here, so start from the exchanges ranked above.
We have not filmed a walkthrough for Germany yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Legal status and regulation in Germany
Bitcoin is fully legal in Germany. Exchanges serving German customers need authorisation under the EU's MiCA regulation, supervised nationally by BaFin, and Germany was among the first countries to issue MiCA licences in 2025. German tax law is unusually favourable to patient holders: gains on bitcoin held for more than one year are tax-free for private individuals, a treatment confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Finance in its 2022 guidance and reaffirmed in its March 2025 update.
Words worth knowing before you buy in Germany
Picked from what this page already says about Germany, not from a standard list.
- MiCAEU member stateMiCA is the European Union's crypto licensing law, and it regulates the companies that sell you bitcoin rather than bitcoin itself, which has no issuer to regulate.
- Recurring buySEPA InstantA recurring buy is the exchange feature that executes a purchase for you on a schedule, pulling money from your bank on the day you picked without you logging in.
Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Germany?
Yes. Bitcoin is legal to buy, hold, and sell in Germany. Exchanges must be authorised under the EU's MiCA regulation, and BaFin supervises the market. Germany was one of the first EU countries issuing MiCA licences.
Do I pay tax on bitcoin in Germany?
If you are a private individual and hold for more than one year, gains are tax-free. Sales within one year are taxable above the annual exemption limit. Staking or lending income can extend or complicate this, so check current Federal Ministry of Finance guidance.
What is the cheapest way to buy bitcoin in Germany?
Fund an exchange account by SEPA transfer and buy on the exchange's pro or advanced interface rather than the instant-buy widget. Card purchases are faster but typically add 1.5 to 4 percent in fees.
Do German exchanges require identity verification?
Yes. Every regulated platform serving Germany requires KYC identity verification under EU anti-money-laundering rules before you can deposit euros and buy.
