Mexico is one of Latin America's largest bitcoin markets and buying is legal: Binance offers the deepest liquidity and peso P2P listings, Kraken adds a first-rate security record, and Coinbase and Coinmama round out the options. The wrinkle is funding: under the 2018 Fintech Law and Banco de Mexico's Circular 4/2019, banks cannot offer crypto services to customers, so money moves through SPEI, the central bank's instant transfer system, or through P2P trades priced in pesos, with cash deposits at convenience store chains covering the unbanked. Remittances are a huge use case, since crypto rails can undercut traditional transfer fees on the money flowing home from the United States every year.

Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Legal status and regulation in Mexico
Bitcoin is legal for individuals and businesses in Mexico, governed since 2018 by the Fintech Law, whose Article 30 states that virtual assets are not legal tender. Banco de Mexico's Circular 4/2019 bars banks and regulated fintech institutions from offering crypto services to their clients, so the market runs through dedicated crypto platforms rather than banks. The CNBV handles financial licensing and the tax authority expects gains to be declared.
Words worth knowing before you buy in Mexico
Picked from what this page already says about Mexico, not from a standard list.

Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Mexico?
Yes. Individuals may buy, hold, and sell bitcoin freely. The Fintech Law of 2018 defines virtual assets and states they are not legal tender, and banks are barred from offering crypto to clients, which is why standalone exchanges dominate.
Why can't I buy bitcoin through my Mexican bank?
Banco de Mexico's Circular 4/2019 prohibits credit institutions and regulated fintechs from providing crypto services to customers; they may only use virtual assets internally with prior authorization. You can still fund a crypto platform by SPEI transfer from your bank account.
What is the cheapest way to buy bitcoin with pesos?
Fund an exchange by SPEI transfer, which is typically free and settles in seconds, then trade on the platform's order book rather than using instant buy. Card purchases and P2P listings both carry a markup over the spot price.
Are bitcoin gains taxed in Mexico?
Yes. There is no crypto-specific statute, but the SAT treats profits from selling virtual assets as taxable income under general rules. Keep records of every purchase and sale, and consult an accountant if your amounts are significant.
