The United Kingdom is one of the world's biggest bitcoin markets and buying is straightforward: Kraken and Coinbase top our rankings, both registered with the FCA under anti-money-laundering rules, with CEX.IO and Bitstamp as capable alternatives. Funding is the easy part, since Faster Payments moves pounds to an exchange in seconds and debit cards work nearly everywhere. Regulation is deepening: cryptoasset regulations made in February 2026 will bring exchanges and custody inside the FCA's full perimeter from October 2027, and the FCA already lifted its ban on retail crypto exchange traded notes in October 2025. Mind the tax side, because the capital gains annual exempt amount fell to 3,000 pounds in April 2024.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for the United Kingdom. It shows the method in two steps: first the country you are buying in, then the exchange. You have done step one by being here, so start from the exchanges ranked above.
We have not filmed a walkthrough for the United Kingdom yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Legal status and regulation in the United Kingdom
Bitcoin is fully legal in the United Kingdom. Crypto firms serving UK customers must register with the Financial Conduct Authority under the Money Laundering Regulations, and financial promotions rules in force since October 2023 govern how platforms market to consumers. The Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Cryptoassets) Regulations 2026, made in February 2026, will bring core crypto activities inside the FCA's authorisation perimeter from October 2027. HMRC treats disposals of bitcoin as capital gains events.
Words worth knowing before you buy in the United Kingdom
Picked from what this page already says about the United Kingdom, not from a standard list.

Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in the United Kingdom?
Yes. Buying, holding, and selling bitcoin are legal. Platforms serving UK customers must register with the FCA for anti-money-laundering supervision, and a fuller authorisation regime made law in February 2026 takes effect from October 2027.
How is bitcoin taxed in the UK?
HMRC treats selling, swapping, or spending bitcoin as a capital gains disposal. Gains above the annual exempt amount, which fell to 3,000 pounds in April 2024, are taxable, and UK exchanges share customer data with HMRC, so keep records and report.
What is the cheapest way to buy bitcoin in the UK?
Deposit pounds by Faster Payments, which is free on the major exchanges, and buy on the pro or advanced trading interface. Instant-buy screens and card purchases are faster but cost noticeably more in fees and spread.
What changes under the new FCA crypto regime?
From October 2027, activities like operating a trading platform, custody, and staking will need full FCA authorisation rather than just anti-money-laundering registration. The FCA published most of its final rules in June 2026, with an authorisation application window due to open from late September 2026, so expect platforms to adjust their UK offerings through the transition.
