Legal status and regulation in Tanzania
Tanzania's position is best described as unclear. A 2019 Bank of Tanzania public notice stated that cryptocurrencies are not recognized as legal tender and warned against their use, and the Finance Act, 2024 goes further: save as the Minister prescribes in regulations, a person who transacts using any currency other than the legal tender issued by the Bank commits an offence, while the same Act taxes digital asset exchange payments through a 3 percent withholding. Since 2021 the government has openly studied a friendlier framework after presidential prompting. Until the Minister's regulations say how that provision applies, buying sits in a legal grey area rather than being authorized, and no platform is licensed locally.
