Liechtenstein pairs one of the world's oldest bespoke blockchain laws with full access to Europe's regulated market, so buying bitcoin is easy and well protected: Bitpanda and Relai top our list, with Kraken, Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Binance also serving residents. The Token and TT Service Provider Act (TVTG), in force since 2020, made the principality a blockchain pioneer, and the EEA's adoption of MiCA, implemented locally on February 1, 2025, plugs it into the same licensing regime as the EU, supervised by the FMA. The currency is the Swiss franc, but SEPA euro transfers work fine for funding, and local banks are unusually comfortable with crypto wealth.

Why these picks

  1. 1. Bitpanda Austria's regulated broker with three MiCAR licenses, built for European savers who fund by SEPA.

  3. 3. Kraken A 2011-vintage exchange with one of the cleanest security records in the business, heading toward a US stock listing.

  4. 4. Coinbase The easiest US on-ramp for beginners, publicly listed, and legally in the clear since the SEC dropped its case.

  5. 5. Bitstamp One of the oldest bitcoin exchanges, now owned by Robinhood and powering its UK and institutional crypto rails.

Watch: how to choose an exchange

This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for Liechtenstein. It shows the method in two steps: first the country you are buying in, then the exchange. You have done step one by being here, so start from the exchanges ranked above.

Do you need a VPN?

A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.

If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Buying bitcoin in Liechtenstein, start to finish

  1. Pick a platform and verify your identity

Choose from the table above and complete KYC verification with a photo ID. Regulated platforms in Liechtenstein require this before you can deposit.

  2. Fund your account with SEPA transfer

Common options here: SEPA transfer, swiss franc bank transfer (CHF), credit or debit card, Apple Pay, Google Pay. Bank transfers are usually the cheapest; cards are faster but add fees.

  3. Buy, then decide where to keep it

Place your order, and for anything more than pocket money consider moving it to a hardware wallet you control. Our security guide covers the habits that keep coins safe.

Legal status and regulation in Liechtenstein

Bitcoin is fully legal in Liechtenstein, which has regulated token services under the Token and TT Service Provider Act (TVTG) since January 2020. As an EEA member, Liechtenstein implemented the EU's MiCA regulation through its EEA MiCA Implementation Act, in force since February 1, 2025, with the Financial Market Authority (FMA) as supervisor; crypto service providers needed MiCA authorization by the end of the transition period in July 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Is bitcoin legal in Liechtenstein?

Yes, and unusually clearly so. Liechtenstein has had its own blockchain law, the TVTG, since 2020, and as an EEA member it now also applies the EU's MiCA regulation, supervised by the Financial Market Authority.

What is the TVTG?

The Token and TT Service Provider Act, in force since January 2020, was one of the world's first comprehensive blockchain laws. It defines tokens as containers for rights and set registration duties for token service providers years before the EU acted; MiCA now supersedes its exchange-service provisions while the rest continues to apply.

Should I fund purchases in Swiss francs or euros?

Either works. Liechtenstein uses the Swiss franc, but the country sits in the SEPA zone, so euro transfers to EU-regulated exchanges are cheap and fast; some platforms also take CHF deposits directly. Compare your bank's conversion rate before choosing.

Do Liechtenstein banks accept crypto-related transfers?

Generally yes. Local institutions, most visibly Bank Frick, have offered regulated crypto trading and custody for years, and transfers to and from licensed exchanges are routine rather than flagged.
