Ugandans buy bitcoin in large numbers despite a wary central bank, and Yellow Card is the strongest on-ramp: it is built around African mobile money rails, with Binance offering deeper markets and serving P2P trades inside escrow. The Bank of Uganda has never banned ownership, but in 2022 it told licensed payment providers not to facilitate crypto transactions, so the market runs through MTN Mobile Money, Airtel Money, and person-to-person deals rather than formal banking channels. No exchange is licensed in Uganda, which makes platform choice and self-custody your real protection. Fund a small amount first, insist on escrow for P2P, and move coins to a wallet you control.

Why these picks
1. Yellow Card Africa's largest licensed crypto on-ramp, spanning more than 20 countries with local bank and mobile money rails.
2. Binance The largest crypto exchange by volume: the deepest bitcoin liquidity anywhere, the lowest headline spot fee of any major platform, and quarterly proof of reserves, under a settled US case and an independent monitor.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for Uganda. It shows the method in two steps: first the country you are buying in, then the exchange. You have done step one by being here, so start from the exchanges ranked above.
We have not filmed a walkthrough for Uganda yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).
Buying bitcoin in Uganda, start to finish
Pick a platform and verify your identity
Choose from the table above and complete KYC verification with a photo ID. Regulated platforms in Uganda require this before you can deposit.
Fund your account with MTN MoMo

Buy, then decide where to keep it
Place your order, and for anything more than pocket money consider moving it to a hardware wallet you control. Our security guide covers the habits that keep coins safe.
Legal status and regulation in Uganda
Buying and holding bitcoin is not illegal in Uganda, but it is unsupported: the Bank of Uganda has warned repeatedly that cryptocurrencies are unregulated, and in 2022 it directed licensed payment service providers under the National Payment Systems Act not to facilitate crypto transactions. No licensing regime for exchanges exists, so residents trade on foreign platforms and P2P markets at their own risk.
Words worth knowing before you buy in Uganda
Picked from what this page already says about Uganda, not from a standard list.
- Escrow contractP2P trades with escrowAn escrow contract locks bitcoin in an output that neither trading party can spend alone, releasing it only when both agree or a named third party breaks the tie.
- Custodial walletMTN Mobile MoneyA custodial wallet is an account at a company that holds the keys for you, so your balance is a claim on that company rather than coins you control.
Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Uganda?
Owning and trading bitcoin is not illegal, but it is unregulated. The Bank of Uganda has warned the public repeatedly and in 2022 instructed licensed payment providers not to facilitate crypto transactions, so the market operates outside formal channels.
Why do mobile money or bank payments to exchanges sometimes fail?
The 2022 Bank of Uganda directive told licensed payment service providers to stay out of crypto, so some transfers linked to exchanges get blocked. P2P trades between individuals and platforms with local rails are how most volume gets through.
What is the cheapest way to buy bitcoin in Uganda?
Compare Yellow Card's all-in price against Binance P2P offers for shillings. P2P can be cheaper but demands discipline: use escrow, check counterparty ratings, and factor in mobile money fees before judging which quote wins.
How do I avoid crypto scams in Uganda?
Refuse any scheme promising fixed or guaranteed returns; several such schemes have collapsed in East Africa and taken savings with them. Buy only through established platforms, keep trades inside escrow, and store long-term holdings in a wallet whose keys only you hold.
