Ledger Nano X review

3.9Last reviewed 2026-08-26

Security warning

Keys are generated and held in an ST33J2M0 secure element certified to CC EAL5+, and Ledger's firmware is closed source. The device was not involved in the December 2023 supply chain attack on Ledger Connect Kit: that compromised a JavaScript library which third party sites load to talk to Ledger devices, after a phished former employee's npm account was used to publish malicious code, and the funds lost came from users who approved transactions on affected sites. Ledger separately disclosed a breach of its e-commerce customer database in 2020, which is why Ledger buyers still receive unusually well informed phishing mail; that leak reached contact details, never keys.

Buy the Ledger Nano X if you want to manage bitcoin from your phone. It is the least expensive Ledger with Bluetooth, and Ledger's own store lists it at $79, marked down from $99. If you only ever plug into a computer, the $59 Nano S Plus gives you the same screen and the same buttons for $20 less.

Ledger announced the Nano X at CES in January 2019 and shipped it that May as its first device with Bluetooth and a battery, and that combination still defines it. You pair it with Ledger's companion app, renamed from Ledger Live to Ledger Wallet, and approve transactions with no cable attached. Your private keys stay inside an ST33J2M0 secure element certified to CC EAL5+, and the Bluetooth link only carries data that is already public or already signed, so pairing never exposes your recovery phrase. Every transaction is still confirmed physically, by pressing both buttons on the device.

What you give up at this price is the screen. The Nano X shows addresses on a 1.1 inch monochrome OLED of 128 x 64 pixels, so checking a long receiving address is a multi step scroll, and Ledger's own comparison page flags that as the tradeoff the touchscreen models fix. The firmware is closed source, which some buyers rule out on principle, and the optional Ledger Recover service introduced in 2023 drew sustained criticism from users who object to any firmware pathway that can export an encrypted copy of a seed.

Ledger's current line is five devices: the $59 Nano S Plus, this $79 Nano X, the $179 Nano Gen5 announced in October 2025, the $249 Flex and the $399 Stax. The Nano X is the cheapest route to signing from a phone; if a touchscreen matters more to you than the price, the Gen5 is the next step up.

Where you can get the Ledger Nano X

Ledger publishes one shipping policy for its whole store, so every device it sells carries the same list. Ledger names 15 countries and regions it will not ship to: Belarus, Cuba, North Korea, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Kosovo, Morocco, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Sudan and Syria. The 218 countries listed here are the other side of that list, and only 13 names are actually subtracted, because North Korea and Kosovo are not among the 231 countries this site covers. One caveat worth recording: the only page on ledger.com that still carries the list is the FAQ of an expired Samsung bundle promotion whose voucher lapsed on December 31, 2024, and shop.ledger.com/pages/shipping-policy now returns a 404. The answer is written store-wide (it answers whether there are any countries or regions where Ledger does not ship its products), so it is the best primary source available and should be re-checked whenever Ledger republishes the policy.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Bluetooth and a built-in battery let you sign from a phone with no cable attached
  • Cheapest Ledger with mobile signing at $79, marked down from $99 on Ledger's own store
  • Keys stay inside an ST33J2M0 secure element certified to CC EAL5+
  • Proven in the field since it shipped in May 2019, with years of firmware updates behind it

What to watch

  • The 128 x 64 pixel screen turns checking a long address into a multi step scroll
  • Closed source firmware, unlike Trezor and BitBox
  • The battery is not user replaceable, which caps how long it stays useful for cable free signing
  • The optional Ledger Recover service introduced in 2023 drew criticism from users who object to any firmware pathway that can export an encrypted seed

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ledger Nano X still worth buying?

Yes, if you want to sign transactions from a phone. It is the cheapest Ledger with Bluetooth, and Ledger's store lists it at $79, down from $99. If you only ever connect to a computer, the $59 Nano S Plus has the same secure element design and the same screen for less.

What is the difference between the Nano X and the Nano S Plus?

Bluetooth and a battery, for $20 more. Both devices use a 1.1 inch 128 x 64 pixel screen and two buttons, but only the Nano X pairs wirelessly with a phone. The Nano S Plus is USB-C only and works with desktops and Android, not with iOS.

Is Bluetooth on the Ledger Nano X safe?

Private keys never leave the secure element, and the Bluetooth link only carries data that is already public or already signed. You confirm every transaction physically on the device, so someone listening to the radio link cannot move your coins.

How many coins does the Ledger Nano X support?

Ledger lists more than 500 assets in the Ledger Wallet app, bitcoin included, with thousands more reachable through third party wallets. Device storage is limited, so you install and uninstall coin apps as you need them, which never touches your keys.
