One of the exchanges we recommend in Germany takes Sofort for funding bitcoin purchases. It is one of several rails in use here; the full picture is in the Germany guide.
What is Sofort?
Sofort, or Sofortüberweisung, is an online bank transfer method owned by Klarna, which acquired SOFORT GmbH in 2014. Instead of entering card details you choose your bank, sign in with your own online banking credentials and confirm a transfer, and the merchant is notified immediately. Klarna combined it with Klarna Payments in July 2024 and retired the old standalone flow, so it now runs inside Klarna's checkout and requires a Klarna account, keeping the Sofortüberweisung name at German checkouts while other markets see it as Klarna's pay now.
- Speed
- Klarna says the amount leaves your bank account within moments of you confirming it, and the merchant is notified at once.
- Cost
- Klarna states that it charges consumers no interest and no fees for Pay now or Sofortüberweisung, so the cost of the method sits with the merchant.
- Limits
- Your own online banking transfer limit applies, because the payment is an ordinary transfer authorised from your bank account.

Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Frequently asked questions
Which exchanges accept Sofort in Germany?
Of the 7 exchanges we recommend in Germany, Binance accepts Sofort for funding purchases.
Is buying bitcoin with Sofort legal in Germany?
Bitcoin is fully legal in Germany. Exchanges serving German customers need authorisation under the EU's MiCA regulation, supervised nationally by BaFin, and Germany was among the first countries to issue MiCA licences in 2025. German tax law is unusually favourable to patient holders: gains on bitcoin held for more than one year are tax-free for private individuals, a treatment confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Finance in its 2022 guidance and reaffirmed in its March 2025 update.
How long does a Sofort deposit take?
Klarna says the amount leaves your bank account within moments of you confirming it, and the merchant is notified at once. That is the rail itself; an exchange may hold a first deposit for longer while it verifies your account.
What does it cost to buy bitcoin with Sofort?
Klarna states that it charges consumers no interest and no fees for Pay now or Sofortüberweisung, so the cost of the method sits with the merchant. Any fee the exchange adds on top is separate, and is shown per exchange above.
