Windscribe review for crypto users

Last reviewed 2026-08-26

No service on this page has been tested as often, or as involuntarily, as Windscribe. Three separate authorities have come looking, and the record of what they found is the review.

Ukrainian authorities seized two servers in July 2021. No user activity logs existed, but the machines were not encrypted at rest and an OpenVPN certificate authority key was exposed. Windscribe published the failure itself, in technical detail, and rebuilt the entire network onto RAM-only servers in a programme it called Operation FreshScribe. In April 2025 a Greek court dismissed criminal charges brought against co-founder Yegor Sak personally, with INTERPOL involvement, after a two-year case in which Windscribe had no user data to produce. In February 2026 Dutch authorities physically took a server from a rack and, by the company's account, found a stock install running entirely in memory with no drives and no logs.

PacketLabs audited the rebuilt infrastructure in 2024 across twenty repositories and roughly eighty thousand lines of code, and Leviathan Security audited the desktop apps in 2021 and the mobile apps in 2022. The apps are open source.

Windscribe markets itself directly at crypto traders, naming Coinbase among others on its own pages, and its framing there is more honest than most: it tells readers a VPN cannot anonymise a KYC-verified account, and advises against using one to reach a restricted region. Signup needs no email at all, payment takes bitcoin including over Lightning, and the free tier gives 10 GB a month with a confirmed email or 2 GB without. Canada is a Five Eyes member, which the company addresses directly rather than hiding.

The evidence for the no-logs claim

A no-logs policy is a sentence on a website until someone checks. This is what has actually been checked for Windscribe, dated, with the primary source for each item.

Independent audits

  • 2024

PacketLabs: the full FreshScribe server infrastructure, 20 repositories and roughly 80,000 lines of code, with external and internal penetration testing. source

  • 2022

Leviathan Security Group: security audit of the mobile applications. source

  • 2021

Leviathan Security Group: security audit of the desktop applications. source

Tested in the real world

  • 2026

Dutch authorities physically seized a Windscribe server from a data centre rack. The company reports they found a stock install running entirely in RAM, with no drives, logs or user data on it. source

  • 2025

Greek prosecutors, with INTERPOL involvement, charged co-founder Yegor Sak personally over activity traced to a Windscribe server. The case was dismissed on 11 April 2025 after a two-year fight, because Windscribe held no user data to produce. source

  • 2021

Ukrainian authorities seized two Windscribe servers. No user activity logs were found, but the unencrypted disks exposed an OpenVPN certificate authority key; Windscribe disclosed this publicly and rebuilt its network to run only in RAM. source

Incidents

  • 2021

The two servers seized in Ukraine were not encrypted at rest, exposing an OpenVPN certificate authority key that could in principle have supported an interception attack against traffic on those servers. source

No email address is required to create or use an account; supplying one is optional and only raises the free-tier cap from 2 GB to 10 GB a month.

The refund sentence that governs a crypto purchase, from Windscribe's own policy:

Crypto refunds are only available for payments over $10 USD. However, we only offer crypto refunds with Bitcoin, not the original currency you use for payment. refund policy

What it does for a bitcoin user

  • Two server seizures and a criminal prosecution, none of which produced user data
  • Disclosed its own 2021 encryption failure and rebuilt the network to RAM-only
  • No email address required to create an account
  • Bitcoin accepted, including over the Lightning Network

What it will not do: bypass KYC, hide on-chain activity, or make a geo-blocked exchange usable. Presenting a false location to an exchange breaches its terms of service and is how accounts get frozen with the balance inside. Details in the VPN guide.

Pros and cons

What works

  • The most real-world testing of any service reviewed here, and it published its own failure
  • Signup needs no email address at all, which almost no paid rival matches
  • A free tier generous enough to test the service properly before paying
  • Open-source apps and a live transparency report of legal requests

What to watch

  • Canada is a Five Eyes member country
  • The 2021 seizure exposed a real encryption weakness, not merely an absence of logs
  • The refund window is seven business days and caps usage at 10 GB, far tighter than rivals
  • Crypto refunds are paid only in bitcoin regardless of the coin you sent

Frequently asked questions

Does Windscribe require an email address?

No. An account can be created and used without one. Supplying an email is optional and only raises the free tier from 2 GB to 10 GB a month.

What happened when Windscribe's servers were seized?

Ukrainian authorities took two servers in 2021 and found no activity logs, though the unencrypted disks exposed a certificate key. Windscribe disclosed it and rebuilt onto RAM-only servers; when Dutch authorities seized a server in 2026, it reports they found nothing.

Windscribe markets itself for crypto trading. Does a VPN help there?

It encrypts the connection between you and an exchange and hides your IP from the local network. Windscribe's own pages say plainly that it cannot anonymise a KYC-verified account and advise against using it to reach a restricted region, which matches the terms of most exchanges.

Can I get a refund on a crypto payment?

Only for payments over $10, only within seven business days, only while usage stays under 10 GB, and the refund is paid in bitcoin whatever coin you originally sent.
