Tennessee keeps bitcoin buying uncomplicated: all eight exchanges we track accept Tennessee residents, and the state drew its regulatory line back in December 2015. That guidance from the Department of Financial Institutions holds that bitcoin itself is not money under the state's money transmission law, but a platform that takes your dollars to execute trades is generally a money transmitter, which is exactly the license the mainstream exchanges hold. Fund purchases with a free ACH transfer, or pay up for a wire or debit card when you want the coins fast. And since the Hall tax on interest and dividends disappeared on January 1, 2021, Tennessee taxes no personal income at all, leaving federal capital gains tax as the only bill on your profits.

Is bitcoin legal in Tennessee?

Bitcoin is legal in Tennessee. The Department of Financial Institutions set the state's position in a December 16, 2015 memo: cryptocurrency is not money under the Tennessee Money Transmitter Act, so two-party crypto trades and plain crypto transfers are unlicensed activity, while exchanging crypto for dollars through a third-party exchanger is generally money transmission that requires a license. TDFI has since moved the state onto the multistate Money Transmission Modernization Act, covered in its October 2023 implementation memo.

Taxes in Tennessee

Tennessee taxes no wage income, and the Hall tax on interest and dividends was fully repealed effective January 1, 2021, so bitcoin gains carry no state tax. Federal capital gains tax still applies.
