What Sofort is
Sofort, or Sofortüberweisung, is an online bank transfer method owned by Klarna, which acquired SOFORT GmbH in 2014. Instead of entering card details you choose your bank, sign in with your own online banking credentials and confirm a transfer, and the merchant is notified immediately. Klarna combined it with Klarna Payments in July 2024 and retired the old standalone flow, so it now runs inside Klarna's checkout and requires a Klarna account, keeping the Sofortüberweisung name at German checkouts while other markets see it as Klarna's pay now.
- Speed
- Klarna says the amount leaves your bank account within moments of you confirming it, and the merchant is notified at once.
- Cost of the rail
- Klarna states that it charges consumers no interest and no fees for Pay now or Sofortüberweisung, so the cost of the method sits with the merchant.
- Limits
- Your own online banking transfer limit applies, because the payment is an ordinary transfer authorised from your bank account.
