What Klarna is
Klarna is a Swedish bank whose checkout is widely offered by German online merchants. Its pay now option moves money straight out of your bank account: you pick your bank, sign in with your normal online banking credentials and confirm with a TAN, which is the service that used to be sold separately as Sofortueberweisung and now carries the Klarna name. Klarna Bank AB (publ) is authorised as a credit institution by Sweden's Finansinspektionen and is registered with BaFin to provide cross border financial services in Germany, from an office at Chausseestrasse 117 in Berlin. You now need a Klarna account to use the bank transfer option, and the merchant decides whether it shows you that option alongside direct debit, card and pay later credit.
