What is MTN MoMo?
MTN MoMo is the mobile money wallet run by the fintech arm of MTN Group across 14 African markets, including Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda, Cameroon, Rwanda, Zambia and Cote d'Ivoire. Your MTN phone number is the account: you deposit cash with one of its agents, then send money, pay bills and merchants, and withdraw. MTN reported 70.8 million monthly active MoMo users and 1.4 million active agents in the first half of 2026.

Is buying bitcoin with MTN MoMo legal in Uganda?
Buying and holding bitcoin is not illegal in Uganda, but it is unsupported: the Bank of Uganda has warned repeatedly that cryptocurrencies are unregulated, and in 2022 it directed licensed payment service providers under the National Payment Systems Act not to facilitate crypto transactions. No licensing regime for exchanges exists, so residents trade on foreign platforms and P2P markets at their own risk.
