Under the EU's MiCA regulation the Autoriteit Financiële Markten (AFM) licenses and supervises crypto-asset service providers, and it granted the EU's very first MiCA licences on 30 December 2024, with De Nederlandsche Bank keeping prudential roles. Firms without a MiCA licence have been prohibited from serving Dutch customers since 1 July 2025. For most private holders, crypto is taxed as part of Box 3 wealth rather than through a capital gains tax.
