What is Credit or debit card?
Credit and debit card payments run over the international card networks, mainly Visa and Mastercard, alongside American Express and domestic schemes such as Cartes Bancaires in France or RuPay in India. Your issuing bank authorises each payment in real time, so the funds are committed the moment the transaction is approved. Visa alone says it connects businesses, banks and governments in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, which is why this is the most widely available way to fund an exchange account. It is also the rail most likely to be repriced or blocked by your own bank.
- Speed
- Authorisation is real time, so a card deposit normally lands within seconds and rarely takes more than a few minutes.
- Cost
- The networks bill the merchant rather than you, but many issuers class a crypto purchase as a cash advance, and the CFPB notes that interest on a cash advance generally starts from the transaction date with no grace period.
- Limits
- Your issuer sets the per transaction and daily ceiling, and a card that works fine for ordinary retail can still be declined on a crypto merchant category.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
We have not filmed a walkthrough for the United States yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Is buying bitcoin with Debit card legal in the United States?
Bitcoin is legal throughout the United States. Oversight is split among the SEC, the CFTC, FinCEN for anti-money-laundering, and state money transmission regulators, with New York's BitLicense the best-known state regime. The federal picture clarified sharply from 2025 onward: the SEC dropped its enforcement case against Coinbase, the GENIUS Act signed in July 2025 established a federal framework for payment stablecoins, and a March 2025 executive order created a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve.

Yes. 5 cards on our list are issued to residents of the United States: Coinbase Card, ether.fi Cash, Fold Card (debit) and Fold Credit Card, Gemini Credit Card, Crypto.com Card. Those spend money and pay rewards in crypto, which is a different product from buying bitcoin with a card.
