India taxes crypto harder than almost anywhere and registers the platforms that may serve you, so both numbers matter before you pick one. A flat 30 percent applies to gains with no loss offset, and 1 percent is deducted at source from nearly every trade on top of whatever the exchange charges. Only platforms registered with the Financial Intelligence Unit India may lawfully operate here: CoinDCX, ZebPay and CoinSwitch are, and so is Binance, which rejoined the register in August 2024 after an eight-month block and a 2.25 crore rupee penalty. ZebPay's spot book is the cheapest at 0.15 percent maker. UPI funds nearly every account and is usually free.

Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Legal status and regulation in India
Bitcoin is legal to buy, hold, and trade in India, but it is not legal tender and the regime is deliberately unwelcoming. Platforms serving Indian users must register with the Financial Intelligence Unit under anti-money-laundering rules, and the tax code imposes a flat 30 percent tax on gains plus 1 percent TDS on transfers, with no offsetting of losses, terms the government reconfirmed in the union budget presented on February 1, 2026. New penalties for unreported crypto transactions take effect from April 2026.
Words worth knowing before you buy in India
Picked from what this page already says about India, not from a standard list.
- Proof of reservesWazirX is flagged in our rankingProof of reserves is an exchange publishing cryptographic evidence that it actually holds the coins it owes customers, usually a Merkle tree of balances plus signatures from its wallets.
- Escrow contractP2P marketplaces with escrowAn escrow contract locks bitcoin in an output that neither trading party can spend alone, releasing it only when both agree or a named third party breaks the tie.
- Recurring buyUPI transfersA recurring buy is the exchange feature that executes a purchase for you on a schedule, pulling money from your bank on the day you picked without you logging in.
Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in India?
Yes. Buying, holding, and trading bitcoin are legal, and the Supreme Court struck down the banking ban in 2020. It is not legal tender, and the government regulates the sector mainly through FIU registration and heavy taxation.
How is bitcoin taxed in India?
Gains are taxed at a flat 30 percent regardless of your income slab, a 1 percent TDS applies to transfers, and losses from one crypto asset cannot offset gains from another. The 2026-27 budget kept these rules and added fines for failing to report transactions.
What is FIU registration and why does it matter?
The Financial Intelligence Unit registers platforms that comply with India's anti-money-laundering law. Using an FIU-registered exchange keeps you on the right side of the rules and gives the platform a legal basis to operate; Binance registered in 2024 after paying a penalty.
Can I use UPI to buy bitcoin?
Yes, and on the FIU-registered Indian platforms it is the standard rail. CoinDCX and CoinSwitch take UPI deposits free of charge, and ZebPay is free up to 5,000 rupees and tiered above that. The exception is Binance, whose UPI channel has been intermittent, which is why Indian buyers there often fall back on P2P trades instead. If you do trade P2P anywhere, keep the whole thing inside platform escrow and never release funds outside it.
