What is Google Pay?
Google Pay is a wallet rather than a rail: it holds a card you already have, usually Visa or Mastercard, and gives the merchant a randomly generated virtual card number instead of your real card number. The payment is still authorised by the same issuer and clears over the same card network, so a Google Pay deposit is a card deposit with a different checkout step. Google retired the standalone Google Pay app in the United States and moved those users to Google Wallet, but the Google Pay app remains separate and active in India and Singapore. Google is explicit that your bank decides whether its cards work with Google Wallet and can restrict any of its cards from mobile payments.
- Speed
- Instant, since the transaction is a normal card authorisation approved in a second or two, so the deposit arrives as quickly as the underlying card allows.
- Cost
- Google says it does not charge a monetary fee to use a virtual card, so you pay only what the underlying card costs, which for a crypto purchase may include cash advance treatment by your issuer.
- Limits
- There is no Google Pay limit of its own: your card issuer's per transaction and daily ceilings apply, and your bank must have enabled that card for mobile payments.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
We have not filmed a walkthrough for Montana yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Frequently asked questions
Which exchanges accept Google Pay in Montana?
Of the 8 exchanges serving Montana, Kraken, Gemini accept Google Pay for funding purchases.
Is buying bitcoin with Google Pay legal in Montana?
Bitcoin is legal in Montana, which stands alone among the fifty states in having no money transmitter licensing statute at all. The Montana Division of Banking and Financial Institutions licenses banks and lenders but has no transmitter regime to stretch over crypto, so exchanges serve residents without any state-level license. Exchanges still register federally with FinCEN as money services businesses.
How long does a Google Pay deposit take?
Instant, since the transaction is a normal card authorisation approved in a second or two, so the deposit arrives as quickly as the underlying card allows. That is the rail itself; an exchange may hold a first deposit for longer while it verifies your account.
What does it cost to buy bitcoin with Google Pay?
Google says it does not charge a monetary fee to use a virtual card, so you pay only what the underlying card costs, which for a crypto purchase may include cash advance treatment by your issuer. Any fee the exchange adds on top is separate, and is shown per exchange above.
