What is Apple Pay?
Apple Pay is not a payment rail of its own. It is a wallet from Apple that stores your existing Visa, Mastercard or other card and hands the merchant a device specific number and a one time code instead of your real card number. The payment clears over the same card network and is authorised by the same bank, so funding an exchange with Apple Pay is funding it with your card. Apple lists supported countries and regions across Europe, Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and North America, but each bank decides whether its own cards can be added.
- Speed
- Instant, because it is an ordinary card authorisation approved in a second or two, exactly as fast as tapping the underlying card.
- Cost
- Apple states that it charges no fee when you pay with Apple Pay in stores, online or in apps, so your cost is whatever the underlying card costs, including any cash advance treatment by the issuer.
- Limits
- Apple Pay adds no ceiling of its own, so your card issuer's per transaction and daily limits apply unchanged, and the card must be from a participating bank in a supported country.

Watch: how to choose an exchange
We have not filmed a walkthrough for Ohio yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN hides which sites you visit from the network you are on and from your internet provider, which is worth having when you move money over a connection you do not control. It does not get you past an exchange's identity checks: every platform we list verifies who you are no matter where you connect from.
If you want one, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).
