Bitcoin access is banned in Nepal
Nepal bans bitcoin outright, and there is no legal way for residents to buy it: Nepal Rastra Bank declared cryptocurrency trading, use, and mining illegal in an August 2017 notice, resting on the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act, and has repeated the warning several times since. Enforcement goes beyond words: in early 2022 authorities ordered internet providers to block crypto trading websites, and penalties run to fines of up to three times the amount involved plus jail time. Informal trading persists regardless, all of it exposed to fraud with no legal recourse, and scams promising crypto returns are a recurring problem in Nepal. Anyone who already holds bitcoin is safest with self-custody: a wallet whose keys only you control breaks no additional law to maintain.
Bitcoin wallets available in Nepal
Each wallet below is available in Nepal under its maker's own published policy, which for some is a shipping list and for others only a bar on sanctioned jurisdictions. Listing one is not advice to buy it, and it does not change the legal position set out above: holding your own keys is a separate question from whether trading is permitted.

Do you need a VPN?
A VPN does not change the legal position set out above: the law applies to you regardless of where your connection appears to come from, and exchanges verify identity on every network. We review VPNs as privacy tools that keep your browsing away from your network operator and internet provider, not as a way around any restriction.
If you run one for privacy, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).

Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Nepal?
No. Nepal Rastra Bank has declared all cryptocurrency dealing illegal since August 2017, under the Foreign Exchange (Regulation) Act and the Nepal Rastra Bank Act. The ban covers trading, use, mining, and related activity.
What are the penalties for crypto trading in Nepal?
Reported penalties include fines of up to three times the transaction amount and imprisonment of up to three years, with prosecution possible under foreign exchange law. Enforcement actions and arrests have occurred, so the risk is not theoretical.
Why does Nepal ban cryptocurrency?
The central bank cites capital flight, fraud, and the strain on foreign currency reserves. Nepal runs strict foreign exchange controls, and crypto is treated as an unauthorized channel for moving money out of the country.
Can Nepalis hold bitcoin they acquired abroad?
The ban makes dealing in cryptocurrency illegal for residents, and there is no recognized legal route to hold or sell it in Nepal. Those with existing coins face a genuinely unclear position and should understand that no local institution will protect or recover their funds.
