4 of the 5 exchanges we recommend in Japan pay out in JPY: bitbank, GMO Coin, bitFlyer and Coincheck. The rail is Furikomi bank transfer. The order below is the same ranking the buying guide uses; an exchange that appears there and not here publishes no JPY payout rail we could verify.
Where to sell and how the money comes out
| Exchange | Withdraw to | Fee | Speed | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| bitbank#1 in the buying guide | Furikomi bank transfer | 550 yen for 30,000 yen or less, 770 yen above 30,000 yen | Not recorded | Paid to the customer's bank account. Minimum 1,000 yen and at least 1,550 yen of assets are needed; the maximum in one go is 99,999,999 yen and the page states no daily maximum. bitbank lists this rail for JPY payouts rather than for Japan by name. |
| GMO Coin#2 in the buying guide | Furikomi bank transfer | Not recorded | Not recorded | Minimum 10,000 yen per request unless you withdraw the whole balance, maximum 30,000,000 yen a day, and only to a bank account in the same name as the GMO Coin account. GMO Coin lists this rail for JPY payouts rather than for Japan by name. |
| bitFlyer#3 in the buying guide | Furikomi bank transfer | Not recorded | Requests before 14:30 JST are generally completed the same business day or the following business day, and after 14:30 JST the following business day or in two business days | Only to a bank account registered to the bitFlyer account and in the customer's own name. Transfer of assets equivalent to a Quick Deposit is limited for 7 days, except deposits made through DOCOMO SMTB Net Bank, and withdrawals requested on the days following Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays may take longer than usual. bitFlyer lists this rail for JPY payouts rather than for Japan by name. |
| Coincheck#4 in the buying guide | Furikomi bank transfer | JPY 407 per withdrawal (page states its figures are as of 1 January 2020) | Not recorded | Maximum 50,000,000 yen per withdrawal, and the fee is flat whatever the amount withdrawn. Coincheck lists this rail for JPY payouts rather than for Japan by name. |
"Not recorded" means the exchange's page we read carries no figure for that cell; the fee on the sale itself is separate and is on each review.
The payout rails in Japan
Furikomi bank transfer
Paid out by bitbank, GMO Coin, bitFlyer, Coincheck.
Furikomi is the ordinary Japanese domestic bank transfer, made from your bank's app, its website, an ATM or a branch counter. Transfers between different banks are cleared over the Zengin System, the nationwide interbank network operated by the Japanese Banks' Payment Clearing Network (Zengin-Net), which almost every bank in Japan belongs to. It is not a brand you sign up for: you enter the recipient's bank, branch, account number and account name, which is how Japanese exchanges take yen deposits.
The rail itself: Since October 2018 the Zengin More Time System has cleared transfers 24 hours a day and 365 days a year, so a furikomi between participating banks normally lands within minutes.
