The rails are EFT bank transfer, Interac e-Transfer, SWIFT transfer, Direct bank deposit (EFT), Wire transfer, EFT (direct bank deposit) and Bank wire. The order below is the same ranking the buying guide uses; an exchange that appears there and not here publishes no CAD payout rail we could verify.

The payout rails in Canada

EFT bank transfer

Paid out by Kraken, Bitbuy, NDAX, Newton.

A local bank transfer moves money between two accounts inside a single country's own payment system, with no correspondent bank and no currency conversion. The scheme is national and different everywhere: SEPA credit transfers and SEPA Instant in the euro area, FedNow and ACH in the United States, Pix in Brazil. The BIS counts fast payment systems live in more than 100 jurisdictions, and the FedNow Service, operated by the Federal Reserve since July 2023, runs a 24 hour business day every day including weekends and holidays. For someone funding an exchange in their own currency this is normally the cheapest option.

The rail itself: Instant rails settle in seconds, and the ECB requires euro instant credit transfers to reach the payee within ten seconds, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, while older batch transfers still take one or two business days.

Interac e-Transfer

Paid out by Kraken, Bitbuy, NDAX, Shakepay, Newton, Netcoins.

Interac e-Transfer is Canada's standard way to move money between bank accounts, run by Interac Corp. and offered inside the online and mobile banking of more than 250 participating Canadian financial institutions. You send Canadian dollars to an email address or mobile number instead of an account number, and the recipient either accepts the transfer or has it land automatically with Autodeposit switched on. Because no account details change hands, it is the everyday way Canadians pay each other and fund accounts online.

The rail itself: The recipient typically sees the money within minutes or even seconds of accepting it, though routine fraud checks can add delay.

SWIFT transfer

Paid out by Kraken, Bitbuy, Shakepay, Netcoins.

A wire transfer is a bank to bank push payment sent over a high value settlement system, Fedwire in the United States and its equivalents elsewhere, routed through correspondent banks when it crosses a border. There is no chargeback: once the sending bank releases it the payment is effectively final, which is why exchanges accept wires for large deposits. A cross border wire can pass through one or more intermediary banks, each able to deduct its own charge before the money arrives.

The rail itself: A domestic wire clears the same business day, with Fedwire open from 9pm eastern the previous calendar day until 7pm eastern and closed on weekends and Federal Reserve holidays, while a cross border wire can take several business days.
