Jaxx Liberty: discontinued, here is the replacement

Last reviewed 2026-08-25

Security warning

Nothing was breached: Decentral retired the product and moved on. Because Jaxx Liberty was self-custodial, the shutdown never touched the funds, and the 12-word backup phrase restores them in any wallet supporting the same assets. The live risk is impersonation. There is no company to contact, Decentral's own sunset post now returns a not-found page, and fake Jaxx recovery services fill that vacuum, so never share the backup phrase with anyone or type it into a web page.

Jaxx Liberty is retired and cannot be used. Decentral announced the sunset on March 7, 2023 and switched off normal wallet operations at 8:00 am ET on March 27, 2023, redirecting the wallet's resources and infrastructure into a separate project called Andiami. For a few weeks after that date the installed app could still show your 12-word backup phrase so you could move to another wallet, and it could do nothing else.

If you still hold coins there, the backup phrase is the whole story. Jaxx Liberty was self-custodial, so Decentral never held your funds: the phrase does. Enter it into a maintained wallet that supports the assets you held and the balances reappear. Exodus and Edge both accept a 12-word phrase and cover a wide spread of coins, which matters here because Jaxx Liberty was multi-asset and people typically kept several chains in it. Less common tokens may need to be added by hand. Never type the phrase into a website that asks for it, and treat anyone offering to recover a Jaxx wallet for you as a threat rather than a service.

What it was: a multi-asset wallet from Decentral, the Toronto company founded by Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio, running on iPhone, Android, Windows, macOS, Linux and as a browser extension, with a built-in exchange and dozens of supported coins. Being everywhere at once was the appeal, and it made Jaxx a common first wallet for people holding more than one chain.

One warning worth stating plainly. Decentral's own sunset post at blog.jaxx.io now returns a not-found page, so the announcement survives mainly through the press release it was issued with. A dead wallet with a dead announcement page is fertile ground for impersonation, so treat anything appearing at a Jaxx address today as unrelated to the wallet until you have proved otherwise.

Pros and cons

What works

  • Self-custodial: the 12-word backup phrase still controls the coins, with no company left to ask permission from
  • Decentral gave three weeks of notice and left the app able to display the backup phrase after functions were switched off
  • Ran on phones, all three desktop systems and as a browser extension, which is why it was so many people's first wallet

What to watch

  • Wallet functions were switched off at 8:00 am ET on March 27, 2023: it cannot send, receive or show balances
  • Decentral released no replacement wallet, because Andiami is a different kind of project entirely
  • Recovery depends entirely on the 12-word backup phrase, and there is no support desk behind it
  • Decentral's own sunset post at blog.jaxx.io now returns a not-found page, so the primary announcement survives mainly through the press release

Wallets that still work

Frequently asked questions

Is Jaxx Liberty shut down?

Yes. Decentral announced the retirement on March 7, 2023 and switched off normal wallet operations at 8:00 am ET on March 27, 2023. For a few weeks afterward the installed app could still show your 12-word backup phrase, and nothing else.

How do I recover my Jaxx Liberty wallet?

Enter your 12-word backup phrase into a maintained wallet that supports the coins you held. Exodus and Edge both accept a 12-word phrase and cover a wide range of assets. Do it on a device you trust, and never type the phrase into a website.

Why did Decentral shut down Jaxx Liberty?

Decentral said it was reallocating Jaxx Liberty's resources and infrastructure into Andiami, a separate project aimed at a user-controlled internet and at node decentralization. The wallet was not sold, and no successor wallet was released.

Are my coins gone if I never migrated?

Not if you still have the backup phrase. The coins sit on their blockchains and the phrase is what signs for them, so recovering them is the same job today as it was in 2023. Without the phrase there is no recovery.

Is there a Jaxx Liberty replacement?

Not from Decentral. If you want the same multi-asset wallet that runs everywhere, Exodus and Edge are the closest current equivalents, with Trust Wallet worth a look if you lean toward tokens and other chains.
