Holdings over time
Cumulative bitcoin held after each disclosed event. The line steps rather than slopes because treasury positions change on purchase dates, not continuously.
We have one sourced disclosure for Tesla so far, shown in the table below. A chart needs at least two dated points, and we would rather show nothing than draw a trend through a single figure. This fills in as we backfill the company's earlier announcements.

About Tesla
Tesla disclosed a 1.5 billion dollar bitcoin purchase in February 2021, briefly accepted bitcoin for cars, and then reversed that decision within weeks on energy consumption grounds. The announcement did more than any other single event to make a corporate bitcoin allocation seem normal.
What followed was less committed. Tesla sold about 10 percent of the position in the first quarter of 2021 to demonstrate liquidity, then converted roughly 75 percent of its remaining holdings to cash in the second quarter of 2022 during a liquidity squeeze. The 11,509 coins left have not moved since.
Since adopting fair value accounting the company marks the position to market each quarter, which means bitcoin now visibly moves Tesla's reported earnings in both directions. The second quarter of 2026 included a 112 million dollar unrealised loss on a carrying value of 674 million dollars.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tesla still accept bitcoin for cars?
No. It accepted bitcoin briefly in early 2021 and suspended the option within about seven weeks, citing the energy used by mining. The company kept the bitcoin it had already bought but has not restored payments.
