About Metaplanet

Metaplanet was a small Japanese hospitality company before April 2024, when it announced bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset and began buying. The pitch was partly macro, a hedge against a weakening yen and Japan's debt load, and partly tax: Japanese investors face punitive treatment on direct crypto gains, so exposure through a listed company is structurally attractive in a way it is not in the United States.

The accumulation has been fast and heavily financed, using share issuance and bond programmes to fund purchases announced through Tokyo Stock Exchange disclosures. The company also runs a bitcoin options income strategy, writing puts against its position to generate yield, which is unusual among treasury companies and adds a layer of risk most of its peers do not carry.

In August 2026 a transfer of 5,014 coins between custodians triggered rumours of a sale. The chief executive publicly reaffirmed that the position remained exactly 43,000 bitcoin, which is a useful illustration of why on-chain movement is not the same as a disposal.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Japanese investors buy Metaplanet instead of bitcoin?

Direct crypto gains in Japan have been taxed as miscellaneous income at rates that can exceed 50 percent, while gains on listed shares are taxed at around 20 percent and can be held in tax-advantaged NISA accounts. That gap is a large part of why a listed bitcoin proxy trades at a premium there.
