What is BPAY?

BPAY is Australia's bill payment scheme, operated by Australian Payments Plus. You pay from inside your own online banking by entering the biller's BPAY Biller Code and a Customer Reference Number, so the money is pushed from your bank account rather than pulled by the biller. AP+ says BPAY is offered by over 95,000 businesses and is available in the online banking of over 140 financial institutions. Nothing about your card or personal details is handed to the biller.

Speed

Not instant: a payment made before your bank's cut off on a banking business day is processed that day, and AP+ says the money clears to the biller within one banking business day.

Cost

Banks generally do not charge for a BPAY payment made online from a transaction account, though it can count towards an account's free withdrawal allowance.

Limits

Ceilings come from your bank rather than from BPAY: ANZ, for example, defaults to $15,000 a day in its app and $75,000 a day in internet banking.
