Bitcoin access is restricted in Myanmar
Myanmar is one of the hardest countries in the world to buy bitcoin, and honesty requires saying there is no formal channel at all. The Central Bank of Myanmar declared digital currencies off limits with Notification 9/2020, issued in May 2020, and since the 2021 military coup it has enforced that ban with account closures, prosecutions, and fresh public warnings. International sanctions on the junta add another wall, keeping regulated global exchanges out. Crypto still circulates through informal broker networks and P2P deals, but that activity is illegal under the ban and saturated with fraud; Myanmar's border regions also host some of the world's largest crypto-enabled scam operations. This page explains the legal picture and the risks rather than pretending a safe path exists.
Bitcoin wallets available in Myanmar
Each wallet below is available in Myanmar under its maker's own published policy, which for some is a shipping list and for others only a bar on sanctioned jurisdictions. Listing one is not advice to buy it, and it does not change the legal position set out above: holding your own keys is a separate question from whether trading is permitted.

Watch: how our country guides work
This is our general video rather than a walkthrough for Myanmar. It shows how the country guides on this site are meant to be used. The legal status above still applies here, and the video does not change it.
The legal status above still applies. This video is informational and is not a guide to buying here. We have not filmed a walkthrough for Myanmar yet, so this is our general one, from our YouTube channel @dontgetrekt. It also sits on the home page, next to the country search it starts from.
Do you need a VPN?
A VPN does not change the legal position set out above: the law applies to you regardless of where your connection appears to come from, and exchanges verify identity on every network. We review VPNs as privacy tools that keep your browsing away from your network operator and internet provider, not as a way around any restriction.
If you run one for privacy, the strongest records on our list belong to NordVPN (6 independent no-logs audits, the most of any service we review), Windscribe (its no-logs claim tested in the real world 3 times) and Proton VPN (the most audited service with a free tier).
What the law says
Cryptocurrency trading is prohibited in Myanmar. The Central Bank of Myanmar's Notification No. 9/2020, issued in May 2020, bans residents from buying, selling, or exchanging digital currencies including bitcoin, and the bank has renewed its warnings and pursued enforcement against illegal converters repeatedly since the 2021 military coup. Sanctions imposed on the military government after the coup keep regulated international platforms out of the market entirely.

- Unhosted walletlegal status: restrictedAn unhosted wallet is the regulators' name for a wallet whose keys you hold yourself, the thing that sits outside the licensed perimeter and keeps getting rules written about it.
- Non-custodial walletno venue we rate serves this marketNon-custodial wallets hold your keys on your own device, which means no company can freeze your bitcoin, reverse a payment, or restore access when you lose the backup.
- Chain analysisrestricted marketChain analysis is the practice of reading the public ledger to group addresses into wallets and attach real names to them, using clustering heuristics plus data from exchanges.
- No-KYC exchangeno local rails listedA no-KYC exchange sells bitcoin without collecting your identity documents, which is legal in some places, prosecutable in others, and always a trade of price and recourse for privacy.
Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal in Myanmar?
No. The Central Bank of Myanmar banned residents from trading digital currencies with Notification No. 9/2020 in May 2020, and it has repeated the warning and taken enforcement action since. Banks are barred from handling crypto transactions.
Why do people in Myanmar still use crypto?
The kyat has been unstable since the 2021 coup, formal banking is tightly controlled, and remittances are expensive, so some people turn to informal crypto channels despite the ban. The opposition National Unity Government has even embraced stablecoins. None of that changes the legal exposure for residents under central bank rules.
What are the biggest risks for crypto users in Myanmar?
Three stack on top of each other: legal risk from the central bank's ban, counterparty risk in informal P2P deals with no recourse, and scam risk, since Myanmar's border zones host industrial-scale crypto fraud compounds. Losses in any of these situations are effectively unrecoverable.
What should existing holders in Myanmar do?
Holding bitcoin securely is a separate question from trading it. Self-custody with a hardware wallet or well-secured software wallet, with the seed phrase stored offline, does not depend on any exchange or bank and protects against platform seizures and scams.
