Coinbase Wallet review

Security warning
Coinbase Wallet is not quite Coinbase Wallet any more: coinbase.com/wallet now loads Base App, Coinbase's rebuilt self-custody app for its own Base network, and if you came here looking for a bitcoin wallet that is the first thing to know. The sign-in page describes it as a place to trade on web and mobile, shows BTC alongside ETH, SOL and a wall of tokens, offers Apple Pay deposits, and advertises up to 3.35% APY on USDC held in it, accrued daily and paid weekly.
The distinction worth getting right is custody. Your Coinbase.com exchange account is custodial: Coinbase holds the keys, can freeze the account, and can help you back in if you lose your password. This app is the opposite: the keys are generated and held on your device, Coinbase cannot move the funds, and if you lose the recovery phrase there is nobody to ask. Same brand, opposite model, and the confusion between them is what phishing calls claiming to be Coinbase support are built on.
For bitcoin specifically, be clear-eyed about what this app is for. It is a trading front end for Base and Ethereum with bitcoin along for the ride, not a wallet designed around bitcoin's features. There is no coin control, no fee bumping worth the name and no Lightning. If bitcoin is the only thing you hold, a bitcoin-focused wallet will serve you better, and hardware will serve you better still.
Two more things a reader should know. Coinbase disclosed in May 2025 that criminals had bribed a small number of overseas customer support contractors to hand over customer records; the company said names, addresses and identity documents were taken for a fraction of its users, and that passwords, two factor codes, private keys and funds were not. Self-custody keys were never within reach of that, which is the argument for self-custody in one sentence. And coinbase.com/legal/wallet, where the wallet's own terms used to sit, now returns a 404, so there is currently no wallet-specific agreement to read.

- Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and Base network assets, per the app's own sign-in page
Pros and cons
What works
- Genuinely self-custodial and separate from the custodial Coinbase.com exchange account
- Backed by a large listed company with a real security team and a bug bounty
- Apple Pay deposits and a familiar trading interface for people already using Coinbase
- Holds bitcoin alongside Ethereum, Solana and Base assets in one app
What to watch
- The product has been rebranded as Base App, so most reviews and guides describe an app that no longer looks like this
- Built around Base and trading rather than around bitcoin, with no Lightning and no coin control
- coinbase.com/legal/wallet now returns a 404, so there is no wallet-specific terms document to read
- A hot wallet on a phone, with no secure element
- The May 2025 support contractor breach put real customer names and addresses in criminal hands, which fuels convincing impersonation
Worth comparing
- Trust WalletUse the phone app, think twice about the extension: an attacker published a malicious build of it on December 24, 2025.
- ZengoThe wallet with no seed phrase: two MPC shares replace the private key, which removes one risk and adds a dependency.
- BlueWalletBitcoin-only phone wallet with real coin control and multisig vaults, whose Lightning side is custodial unless you run the server yourself.
Frequently asked questions
Is Coinbase Wallet the same as my Coinbase account?
No. Your Coinbase.com account is custodial, meaning Coinbase holds the keys and can freeze or restore it. Coinbase Wallet, now Base App, is self-custodial: you hold the keys, Coinbase cannot touch your funds, and nobody can recover them for you.
What happened to Coinbase Wallet?
Coinbase rebuilt and rebranded it as Base App, the self-custody app for its own Base network. Going to coinbase.com/wallet now lands you on the Base App sign-in page.
Can I keep bitcoin in Base App?
Yes, BTC is one of the assets shown on its own sign-in page. It is not a bitcoin-first wallet though: the app is built around Base and Ethereum trading, so a bitcoin-focused wallet will give you better tools.
Can Coinbase freeze my Coinbase Wallet?
No. Because the keys live on your device, Coinbase can neither freeze the wallet nor recover it. That cuts both ways: nobody can lock you out, and nobody can help if you lose your recovery phrase.
