Connecticut regulated bitcoin companies before most states had noticed them: Public Act 15-53 pulled virtual currency into the state's money transmission licensing back in 2015 and let the Banking Commissioner demand larger surety bonds from crypto licensees. A decade on, the Department of Banking still runs the regime, publishing virtual currency FAQs for license applicants. The roster shows one gap: Binance.US does not accept Connecticut residents, while Coinbase, Kraken, Gemini, River, Swan Bitcoin, Strike, and Coinmama all do, so you lose little by the omission. Buying stays simple. Link a bank account for free ACH transfers, reserve debit cards for moments when settlement speed justifies the markup, and use a wire when the purchase is large enough to warrant one.

Is bitcoin legal in Connecticut?
Bitcoin is legal in Connecticut. The Department of Banking licenses money transmitters under the state's Money Transmission Act, and Public Act 15-53, with virtual currency provisions effective October 1, 2015, expressly brought transmitting monetary value in the form of virtual currency inside that regime, giving the Banking Commissioner discretion to impose extra conditions such as larger surety bonds on crypto licensees. A 2022 advisory restated that transmitting without a license violates state law.

Frequently asked questions
Is bitcoin legal under Connecticut law?
Yes. Buying and holding bitcoin is legal, and companies transmitting virtual currency for Connecticut customers must hold a money transmitter license from the Department of Banking, a requirement on the books since 2015.
Why can't I use Binance.US from Connecticut?
Binance.US lists Connecticut among the states it does not support, so residents cannot open or fund accounts there. The other seven exchanges we track, including Coinbase, Kraken, and Gemini, all serve the state.
What did Public Act 15-53 actually do?
The 2015 law wrote virtual currency into Connecticut's money transmission statute and empowered the Banking Commissioner to attach extra conditions, including higher surety bonds, to licensees handling virtual currency. It made Connecticut one of the first states to regulate crypto companies explicitly.
What is the cheapest route to bitcoin for Connecticut buyers?
Link a checking account to a licensed exchange and fund with a free ACH transfer. Debit card purchases settle instantly but carry the highest fees.
