About GameStop

GameStop bought 4,710 bitcoin in May 2025, funded from the cash pile it had accumulated through repeated share sales into retail enthusiasm. The purchase fitted a company whose shareholder base overlaps heavily with crypto retail investors.

What happened next matters more than the purchase. The company sold over-the-counter covered call options on 4,709 of those 4,710 coins through Coinbase Credit, at strikes between roughly 105,000 and 110,000 dollars. Because the arrangement allows the counterparty to rehypothecate the coins, GameStop derecognised the bitcoin from its balance sheet and now reports a digital assets receivable instead. It has the economic exposure, but not the bitcoin.

That is a genuinely different position from the other companies on this list, and its 55.5 billion dollar bid for eBay in May 2026 leaves the treasury's future unclear.

Frequently asked questions

Does GameStop still own its bitcoin?

Not in the ordinary sense. It wrote covered calls on 4,709 of its 4,710 coins through an arrangement that lets the counterparty rehypothecate them, so the bitcoin left its balance sheet and was replaced by a receivable. The economic exposure remains, capped by the option strikes.
