What is TED?

TED, Transferencia Eletronica Disponivel, is Brazil's same day interbank transfer, instituted by the Banco Central do Brasil in 2002. It moves reais between accounts at different institutions using branch and account numbers, and the sending institution chooses where it settles: the central bank's STR, a real time gross settlement system, or Nuclea's SITRAF, which nets positions across a daily cycle. Pix has taken over most everyday transfers, so TED now matters mainly for larger amounts and for accounts or platforms that still ask for it.

Speed

Settlement is gross and in real time, so funds normally land within minutes, but only on business days: the central bank's published STR schedule runs the client transfer message window from 06:30 to 17:30 Brasilia time.

Cost

TED is a priority service under CMN Resolution 3.919, so each bank publishes its own per transfer price, and no fee may be charged for internet or self service TED from an account classified as a conta eletronica.

Limits

There is no scheme ceiling; banks set their own limits, and an order placed after the cutoff or at a weekend waits for the next business day.
