What is TNM Mpamba?

TNM Mpamba is the mobile money wallet run by Telekom Networks Malawi through its wholly owned subsidiary TNM Mpamba Limited, and it works only in Malawi, in kwacha. You hold a balance against your TNM SIM, load it with cash at an agent or by pulling funds from a bank account across NatSwitch, the national switch that links Malawi's banks and mobile money operators, then push it out to a person, a merchant till or a paybill number. Funding an exchange account means sending from the wallet to the number the platform gives you. The Reserve Bank of Malawi supervises the service under the Payment Systems Act (No. 15 of 2016) and the Payment Systems (E-Money) Regulations of 2019.

Speed

Wallet to wallet transfers post in real time, so the balance moves within moments of you confirming the send on the handset.

Cost

TNM prices sending and cash out in bands by amount rather than one flat rate and revises the tariff from time to time, so read the current schedule in the Mpamba menu before you send.

Limits

Wallets are tiered under the Reserve Bank of Malawi's e-money rules, so your daily transfer and balance ceilings depend on how much identification you have registered.

Speed and cost describe the rail itself. What an exchange adds on top varies by platform and is shown per exchange below.
