What is PromptPay?

PromptPay is Thailand's national bank transfer service, launched in 2016 and run under the Bank of Thailand's payment system framework. It lets you move baht between Thai bank accounts using a mobile phone number, a citizen ID number or a plain account number, from any Thai bank's app, internet banking, ATM or branch. It is the everyday way Thai residents pay each other and fund accounts with Thai platforms, and one mobile number or citizen ID can be linked to only one account.

Speed

Transfers are credited immediately: Bank of Ayudhya states that the payee receives the money as soon as the payer sends it.

Cost

The Bank of Thailand's ceiling is free up to 5,000 baht, then under 2 baht to 30,000, under 5 baht to 100,000 and under 10 baht above that, but most banks have waived the charge on app and internet transfers since 2018.

Limits

PromptPay sets no cap of its own: each bank sets the per transaction and daily transfer limits in its own app, and you can usually raise them there before a large deposit.
