What is iDEAL?
iDEAL is the Dutch online bank payment method, run by Currence iDEAL B.V., which has been owned by the European Payments Initiative since 2023, and it carries around 70 percent of e-commerce transactions in the Netherlands. At checkout you choose your bank, get sent to your own banking app to approve a pre-filled transfer to the merchant's IBAN, and the merchant is told immediately whether the payment succeeded. From the end of January 2026 iDEAL is being rebranded and migrated to Wero, the European Payments Initiative's wallet, with every iDEAL merchant due to have switched by the end of 2027.
- Speed
- You approve in your bank app and the merchant gets confirmation immediately, so an exchange normally credits the deposit within minutes.
- Cost
- Free for the payer: the Dutch Payments Association states iDEAL is included as standard and free of charge with every payment account, with the merchant paying the scheme fee.
- Limits
- The practical cap is whatever per transaction or daily transfer limit your own bank applies to your account, so check it in your banking app and raise it first if you need to.
