EVC Plus shows up in Somalia as part of how people buy bitcoin locally, even though none of the exchanges we track lists it as a direct funding rail. The country guides below explain what that looks like in practice.
What is EVC Plus?
EVC Plus is the mobile money service run by Hormuud Telecom, used mainly in southern and central Somalia, and Hormuud is one of the six mobile money providers the Central Bank of Somalia lists. Money sits in a wallet tied to your phone number rather than a bank account, and it is used for everyday transfers, shop payments and salaries. Somali mobile money of this kind is effectively dollarised: the World Bank described it in 2017 as a virtual, dollarised currency, used by about 73 percent of the population against 15 percent holding a formal bank account.
- Speed
- Wallet to wallet transfers land immediately, and the central bank's Somali Instant Payment System, live since January 2025, is being extended to move money in real time between wallets, banks and card terminals.
- Cost
- No consumer tariff for EVC Plus could be verified on any operator or central bank page, so read the charge quoted on the USSD or app confirmation screen before you approve a transfer.
Speed and cost describe the rail itself. What an exchange adds on top varies by platform and is shown per exchange below.
Using EVC Plus in Somalia
EVC Plus appears in one country guide on this site, Somalia, where deposits settle in Somali shilling (SOS). Buyers there fund exchange accounts with Zaad, P2P trades, Cash trades, Credit or debit card as well, and the country guide ranks the exchanges that take each one.
