Bitcoin ATM shows up in 2 of our country guides as part of how people buy bitcoin locally, even though none of the exchanges we track lists it as a direct funding rail. The country guides below explain what that looks like in practice.

What is Bitcoin ATM?

A bitcoin ATM is a standalone kiosk that sells bitcoin for cash or card, and sometimes buys it back. There is no scheme behind it: each machine belongs to a private operator that sets its own rate, and you scan a wallet address at the screen rather than funding an exchange account. Regulators treat those operators as exchange businesses. The National Bank of Georgia's virtual asset rules cover exchange, including via kiosks, between convertible virtual assets and fiat currency, and the UK FCA states that none of the cryptoasset firms on its register are approved to offer crypto ATM services, so any operating there are doing so illegally.

Speed
The kiosk takes your cash right away, but the bitcoin only arrives once the transaction confirms on the network, which is normally minutes rather than seconds.
Cost
No scheme sets the price, so each operator picks its own commission and its own spread over the market rate, which is why the same purchase can cost very differently at two machines.
Limits
Operators set their own per transaction and daily ceilings, and identity checks usually kick in above a threshold the operator chooses, so the cap you hit is the machine's rather than the network's.

Speed and cost describe the rail itself. What an exchange adds on top varies by platform and is shown per exchange below.
